Model: Nicole Hernandez

Since i have been shooting for 10 years now i have been able to actually see my “style” of shooting and what i favor more in terms of what inspires me.  i have always had an infinity obsession with the way comic book art is drawn and i try to always put that into my photographs.

Here we did a vary watered down and basic no Makeup approach with these and just went for more of a natural essence.

All of these were shot at ISO 100 to insure the highest amount of detail and least amount of noise possible. The f/Stop was at f/8 and I shot open at 2 sceconds to be able to still capture the ambient Back Lights which are at a very low output in comparison to a strobe blast. I shot with no modeling lights on and just the back lights on, giving me just enough light to still pull focus.

Here is a recent shoot i did for Sapheit Fitness’s website.  These images were shot on a Canon 7D at f/11 and a fluctuating shutter speed of between 125sec and 1 sec to establish a feel of “movement”.  as you can see by this behind the scenes photo above my lighting scenario and i would just “raise” or “lower” the lights as needed to get the right detail and separation in the blackest areas.

Here is a model test i did with model Nicole Hernandez.  When i do a model test i like to show a models versatility, i want to show their complete range and ability.  Nicole has such a natural beauty she was barely wearing any make up in any of these shots except for a little mascara. For lighting i used a white shoot through umbrella to camera left most of the time but also switched the light modifier between a beauty dish when i wanted more contrast.  I used shutter drag rotating on these shots to give a little movement when i wanted it.

This is a Shoot we did last week with Clothing Designer & Fashion Stylist “Misova”.  For lighting on this shoot i used a Beauty Dish to camera left a small reflector head down low on camera right and 2 bare bulb heads to light my background.  I shot at a variety of shutter speeds to create movement when i wanted some shutter drag and then closed up more when i wanted more detail. Shot on a Canon 7D @ ISO 100.

The lighting i used for these shots can be viewed above. i shot @ ISO 100 @ f/11 @125sec @ a focal of fluctuation around 20mm on a Canon 7d (crop sensor) using a Canon USM EFS 17-55mm Lense.
As you can see from the photo diagram above that i flagged off the majority of the right kicker light to get just the right amount of detail on the clothing and weaponry. For my key light(camera left) i decided to switch last minute to a Beauty Dish to get more punch and contrast on the face. I used black bounce cards to control light spill and to define detail around the clothing.
For the imaging i used some photos i had taken downtown on scouting with the Director, Eric.  I layed them in and tweaked them up a bit to my visual satisfaction and still trying to encapsulate the mood of the film.
Thanks to everyone involved, the team did great..and Eric Neal is superb at getting a plan together and executing it.

The shots you see with the black background were shot at iso 1600 @ 1/100sec @ f/2.8 with a 52mm focal length on a Canon 7D (crop sensor)

The lighting i used in these was actually quite simple.  For the shots you see with the blue or brown background i used straight window lighting and a small led video light to bring in more detail and free me from the limitations i find when shooting in lower ISOs. These were shot at ISO 800-1000 at f/2.8 @ 60-160 sec using an old Mamiya 645 55mm Lense i have a conversion for on my Canon 7D.

The lighting you see on the gray/white backdrop was a little different, here i used a Calumet 750 Travelite to camera left fitted with a beauty dish, to camera right i used a Photogenic Strobe light fitted with a 60 inch umbrella and then a 30x8 inch rectangular softbox to camera right for fill. These i shot at ISO 100 125sec @ f/14 using a focal length of about 22 on a Canon 7D (crop sensor).

As i was sitting my my porch smoking a cigarette out the porch door the other night, the snow had built up on my screen and the lights were shining through them so elegantly and dream like i had to snap a few photos as i knew they would work so well as a background texture for this shoot.

As you can see from the “Behind the Scenes” #bts the lighting setup for a few of these darker shots of the model sitting on the stool. I shot these at 1/10 of a second to make more time for exposure due to the lower light level output of the small led light. I fired the flash on the rectangular softbox to freeze most of the motion and then let the small led light pick up the ambient light details to give the photo a little movement.

For the shots with the texture these were shot with a shoot through umbrella camera left, and a rectangular softbox with an aqua filter to camera right at around  ISO 100 125sec @ f/11.

Technical Notes:

I shot these photographs of Chicago Model: Baylee using primarily one Parabolic Umbrella Modifier fitting on a Calumet Travelite using a Canon 7d on faithful picture mode at ISO 100 f/14 at 125sec.

For the first look we wanted something really natural and simple looking so we used minimal makeup to showcase more of the models natural essence.

For the second look we wanted to pump it up a bit and it was a mixed inspiration of images the model had sent me that she liked and also between consulting with Gianna (HMUA) to find something that would work well. For Post Production i used some of Alien FX’s filters to hone more of a look to my tasting.

Here is a Model test shoot i did for Model Management Agency Galatea in Chicago.  The models name is Ellie.  I shot the first 3 photos above @ ISO 1000 and wide open at 2.8 using a Mamiya 55mm lense. I used a Canon 7D which is a crop sensor so this will calculate to about 80mm after the conversion in normal 35mm photographer standards.  For lighting these, i used a north facing window and placed a silver reflector to my left for fill. I then brought them into both Adobe Lightroom and PS for editing to my choice.

For the remainder of the shots i wanted to simulate natural lighting to keep the consistency so i used one medium sized octobank softox with eggshell grates and a black screen over the diffuser to camera left.  I also used 2 white cardboard reflectors for fill. These were shot @ 100 ISO 125sec and about 11-18 F Stop for maximum detail. I used a Calumet Travelite as my key light. For these later shots, i purposely shot at a lower lower contrast in camera to be able give these a darker consistent look. I also shot these all in Large RAW Format.
